The Named Orchids
Lizard Orchid
The Lizard Orchid
Lizard Orchid
The Lizard Orchid var. Alba.
Possibly the rarest of Dorset's orchids with only one site and only a handful of plants in a good year. Discovered on a roadside verge near Upton in 1987 this plant can grow to 45cm. When I took this photo in June '99 there were eight plants there, two of them with no chlorophyll, that is, no colour. The only others I know of in the UK are now in north Bristol and on the sand dunes at Sandwich Bay in Kent.

As of 2004, I am not aware of any plants occurring at this site in the last couple of years.
